SLP Series:  Narrative and Expository Language Intervention for Children with Comprehension Needs    (1 Day Event)

Description:

Research-based intervention strategies for improving narrative and expository language skills will be presented.  The morning will focus on accelerating narrative language skills and the afternoon will focus on expository language skills.  These strategies can be used during intervention with students who have identified oral language and/or reading comprehension needs to facilitate the acquisition of K-6 ELA standards as well as IEP goals.

SLP Series: Looking at Technology Through a Language Lens  (1 Day Event)

Description:

The Internet and mobile technologies provide a wealth of free or low-cost interactive content to be used in contextual, project-based, and curriculum-driven interventions for students and clients with communication disorders. This day-long workshop will model how to use simple Internet and mobile technology resources as a context for speech and language therapy. Activities will focus on applying criteria for selecting resources, using task analyses and other strategies for identifying and cataloguing relevant resources, and designing pre/post activities. Additionally, strategies will be provided for using social media to expand awareness of technology in Speech-Language Pathology.

SLP Series:  Progress Monitoring Using the Narrative Language Measures (NLM)  (1 Day Event)

Description:

The Narrative Language Measures are a newly developed curriculum-based measurement progress monitoring tool designed to help interventionists assess oral language progress and intervention effects.  This curriculum-based measurement tool is free, available online (http://languagedynamicsgroup.com/products.html ), designed for use with preschool and school-age students, and is sensitive to changes in narrative language development regardless of intervention program or approach.  The measures include a test of narrative retelling, a test of personal story generation, and a test of story comprehension.  Participants will be able to access and use the Narrative Language Measures to report student progress over time as a result of this course.

Title:

SLP Series: Building Oral Language and Emergent Literacy Skills for Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities  (1 Day Event)

Audience: Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Special Education Teachers working with students with moderate to significant disabilities.  Participant teams of an SLP and special education classroom teacher are preferred.

 

 

Description:

This session will focus on communication & language skills that are foundational to literacy for students with moderate to severe disabilities, and how to promote literacy development that results in reading with comprehension.  Participants will learn about how school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and classroom teachers of students with moderate to severe disabilities can collaborate to facilitate literacy and language development.   Comprehensive literacy instructional strategies will be presented.  Participant teams of an SLP and classroom teacher are preferred.  This session is appropriate for SLPs and teachers who work with students who are AAC users as well as non-AAC users.
